Maison Châtaigne is a charming house full of true Breton character and history, entered by a carved granite arched doorway, which was once the entrance to the dwelling area of a 16th Century single barn ‘fermette’. Whilst renovating this building the original barn entrance was discovered, which had been partially blocked up for at least 70 years to form a small window. This old doorway, complete with ‘eyebrow’ oak lintel and its original well-worn slate step, is now a lovely oak framed, full length double-glazed window in the Dining area. Maison Châtaigne overlooks the courtyard to the front and the gardens and woods to the rear.

The Lounge is a spacious yet warm and cosy room , with the original high-mantled oak and slate fireplace housing a wood-burning stove. A glazed door leads directly onto the sheltered terrace and garden at the back of the house, from which you can enjoy a view towards our small private woods. The window to the front and the partly glazed arched front door overlook the Courtyard, filling this room with sunshine for most of the day. As with all our properties, the Lounge has a good quality CD player, a selection of novels and other books, and a games cupboard with a range of indoor and outdoor games suitable for all ages.

The Kitchen/Dining area is separate from the Lounge, and enjoys views to both the rear and the front of the property. The whole of the ground floor has varnished wooden floorboards giving a warm appearance as well as being comfortable underfoot, and the oak and chestnut lintels are all from reclaimed timbers. The modern kitchen is equipped to a high standard, allowing you to fully explore the wonderful fresh foods readily available in Brittany, and the table comfortably seats six. A gas cooker with oven, washing machine, fridge, microwave and coffee machine are provided for your convenience.

Upstairs, Maison Châtaigne has two really good sized Bedrooms and a Bathroom. The second Bedroom can sleep 3 adults, all in full size single beds, and a baby’s cot can also be provided upon request. Like all of our properties the upstairs rooms have beautiful exposed oak beams, but in this house we believe them to be the original 400 year old A-frames, once the supports for a thatched roof. The colourfully tiled Bathroom is fitted with a powerful shower, WC and hand basin. There is also an electric razor point in the Bathroom for the gentlemen who feel obliged to shave when on holiday!

For your comfort and convenience we have provided modern fittings and appliances, but have furnished our properties with traditional Breton-style furnishings to retain the character of the houses. Outside the front of the house is the original Well. For your safety this is kept covered, but delightfully clear and fresh water can still be drawn from it.

Nefflier Cottage

Nefflier Cottage is a very spacious 1 bedroom cottage, full of charm and character, yet fitted with modern conveniences. Originally the Stable for the farm at Poulancre d’en Bas, it now includes part of the Main Barn on the ground floor, providing a generous and fully equipped kitchen with gas cooker, microwave and washing machine, and a modern bathroom. The front of Nefflier Cottage faces the Courtyard and to the rear is a private and very sunny terrace with Barbecue and garden furniture. The terrace faces to the south and west, so provides the perfect location for outdoor eating, or perhaps for “sun-downers” drinks after a busy day out!

The spacious yet cosy Lounge/Dining room retains the original open beams in the ceiling, and has a feature stone wall at one end with a wood-burning stove. Doors lead from both sides of the room; one to the Courtyard, the other to the private garden and terrace area. Beyond the garden is the parking area and sheltered communal grounds shared by our other two properties. Although primarily a holiday cottage for a couple or small family, we have provided ample crockery and other equipment to host visitors, and the dining table will comfortably seat six adults. The wood-burning stove, carefully placed lighting and good quality CD player combine to provide the perfect winter getaway for a romantic weekend, the likes of which are very hard to find in the off-season months in Brittany.

The bedroom is 5m x 7m, providing ample room for a young family, as well as being a really luxurious hideaway for a couple. The Bedroom has a double bed and a single bed, and plenty of room for an additional cot or foldaway bed if required. Please note that the stairs to the Bedroom are quite steep, and may not be suitable for some people.

The open beamed Kitchen is very spacious and overlooks the rear garden and terrace. With modern fittings, washing machine, microwave, filter coffee machine, fridge and freezer, the kitchen is well equipped for the creation of gourmet meals, but equally well suited to summer barbecues and salads! A half-glazed door leads from the kitchen directly onto the terrace, making it easy for the “chef” to use the BBQ provided!

The Bathroom has a large tiled shower cubicle with a powerful shower unit, built in hand basin and vanity unit and a WC. There is also an electric razor point in the Bathroom.

Like all of our properties, Nefflier Cottage is equipped with traditional furniture and modern appliances, in order to retain its character whilst providing you with a comfortable and luxurious holiday home.
